History of Green Township - Hancock County
Green Township, nestled in Hancock County, Indiana, is one of nine townships that make up the county's landscape. Known for its quiet rural charm and fertile farmland the township is home to the small community of Eden and carries a legacy rooted in early American settlement. It was officially organized in 1832 and named after John Green, one of the area's pioneering settlers.
The first recorded land entry in Green Township was made by William Shortridge on May, 26, 1829. Later that same year, John Green and Andrew Jackson followed suit, marking the beginning of a community shaped by agriculture and frontier spirit. The township spans 30 sections and remains the only one in Hancock County without a railroad-an absende that has helped preserve its pastoral character.
In the early days, State Road 9 served as a toll road, and stagecoaches drawn by horses would pass through Eden, which was originally known as Lewisburg. At one time Green Township boasted two post offices-one in Eden and another in Milner's Corner. Today residents rely on the nearby Maxwell post office for mail services, a small shift that reflects the township's enduring simplicity and close-knit nature.
Green Township contains 19,194 acres of land, 30.34 square miles, one mill stream and two smaller streams, one border county, four border townships and as of the last census - 1635 residents.
SCHOOLS
It is home to the community of Eden, where Greenfield-Central Schools' Eden Elementary School is located for grades Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. The school is consistently one of the Indiana's top performers in standardized tests.
At one time, Green Township had ten small frame school-houses and the home of Eden High School which was closed in 1956. Eden Elementary School is on the same land today.
CHURCHES
Eden United Methodist Church - 2122 E. Eden Road - 317-326-2212 - edenumc.com
- In 1836 a Methodist circuit rider by the name of Steven Master came to Eden and conducted meetings in various settlers' cabins and barns. The few settlers in the area decided, there was a need to have some sort of church. In 1838, a log church was built on the grounds where the church stands today. By the 1860's the Eden Community was now a well-established rural community and the old log church gave way to a frame building. Seventy years after the first meeting in the log cabin the Eden Methodist Episcopal church now has a beautiful brick structure with stained glass windows at a cost of $8,000. The brick church was dedicated on Sunday, October 13, 1905. Over time the church has had many additions such as a basement, rostrum, new roof, and church interior. In 1968, the name of the church changed from Eden United Brethren Church to Eden United Methodist Church after merging with the Evangelical church. The church holds community breakfast the first Saturday of each month and also has a ham and turkey supper which started in the 1960's.
